. topping our agenda, president obama taking his campaign to combat gun violence outside the beltway and on the road for the very first time. this hour, the president en route to minneapolis, where he will talk to law enforcement leaders about his sweeping plan to overhaul the nation's gun laws and minneapolis known as murder-apolis in the 1990s, that violence peaked in '95 when the minneapolis area saw 99 murders. a city-wide crackdown brought gun related deaths down to a 30-year low in 2011. as the president hits the road, the "wall street journal" reporting the senate is poised to take action on gun violence. the paper saying that senate leaders will introduce a gun bill that includes proposals backed by the president with one notable exception. the ban on military style automatic weapons. >> i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it didn't make sense, but i'll take a look at it. let's not limit this conversation to only guns. there are other issues, very important. >> any crackdowns congress could continue would likely be met with resistance from the right. the h

, is it time for a breakup? >>> president obama's nominee for defense secretary chuck hagel has the 51 votes needed in the senate for confirmation. today he actually needed 60 to control republican procedural hurdle that would allow the vote on his nomination to actually take place. he got 58 votes. hagel came up two votes short of what he needed. today he will eventually have those votes. that's for sure. >> we can get this issue resolved on the day that we return from the recess. certainly there is, i believe, sufficient votes to invoke cloture at that time. >> when we get back, unless there's a real bombshell, i vote for cloture and move on to his nomination. >> that's right. senators john mccain and lindsey graham will vote to end debate on the confirmation of chuck hagel, eventually, but today, they just didn't feel like it. they towed the party line and voted to block hagel's nomination. the procedural vote failed 40-58 with one senator voting present and one senator not voting. 54 democrats voted in favor as did four republicans. no cabinet member nominated for a national security pos

think a lot of frustration should go back to the obama administration. it was the obama administration insist we have sequester if the debt super-committee failed to reach an agreement and they failed to reach an agreement. i remember very specifically at one of the presidential debates president obama told governor romney sequestration is not going to happen. two weeks away and looks like it will happen. it will be devastating for the military. we're talking about curtailed military operations around the globe. reduced funding for mint nance and training. 800,000 dod citizens are looking for furlough or forced time without pay. this will be devastating and we're just getting started with sequestration. bill: the last point you just made a lot of people haven't talked about. 800,000 people coput on furlough for minimum of 22 days, three weeks. back to what panetta saying there, i look for members to work to us and can't sit here and complain. he used a different word. i use complain the is he talking about republicans or democrats as well? >> he is talking about both democrats and repu

cain and lindsey graham. it is also interesting to note, jon, lindsey graham is someone who supported obama supreme court nominees. he clearly is opposing hagel here. jon: primarily what a lot of these senators want is information on a number of fronts, especially on the benghazi attack. what happened, how muc did the white house know, how involved was the president? that's what they're looking for, right? >> yeah, that is what they're looking for. they did ask some questions of hillary clinton about what she said to the president. their talks that night. they want more information as far as what, what was happening that night as these reports were coming in that christopher stevens and others were in danger. what was the white house doing? they want more details on it. until they get those details senator john mccain said looks like he would support the filibuster. earlier in the week he was saying, suggesting he wouldn't. but he wants more answers. until he gets the answers looks like hagel could be stonewalled at least for this week. jon: how interesting and maybe ironic that the pivotal vote or
